Coco Chanel, the legendary genius behind Chanel, changed fashion forever in the 1900s and even today. But did you know she also changed the way we look at tans and tanning?
To explain her impact, it's crucial to talk about sun tanning throughout history. Before 1920, tanning was associated with being in the lower class and, because that was frowned upon, was to be avoided at all costs.
Upper class folks went to ridiculous and dangerous approaches to lighten their skin tone. Some women used lead-based cosmetics and arsenic to get just the right light skin tone. They also carried a parasol around with them at all times to make sure their skin didn't get too tanned.
It wasn't until the 1920s that Chanel fans spotted her after a sun burn. Because she was such a trendsetter, fans began to emulate her look and tanning spread in popularity.
From that point on, tanning grew from a hobby to an industry. In the 1940s, advertisements started promoted sun bathing. In 1978, tanning beds were introduced.
It was around the same time that spray tanning and sunless tanning became popular alternatives to tanning in beds.
That brings us to 2003 when Envy Tan was started as a mobile tanning business.
From our humble beginnings, we have grown to the industry leader in spray tanning and now help entreprenuers build other spray tanning businesses around the country.
