I know I talk a lot about sunscreen and protection from the sun. But, after all, the goal of spray tanning is to achieve that glow without all the potential dangers of sun damage. Well…I’m going to do it again...just (maybe) once more as the seasons change and people think they can put the sunscreen away because the temperature drops.
This morning I came across an article that was published in London. It was a study commissioned by Moletestuk.com (Mole Test UK) to gauge the awareness of melanoma in the UK.
I understand that not every woman (or man) has access to the wealth of skin and health information that my job provides me, but I am astounded by the results of the study. The results were determined after women submitted their answers to the screening service.
The findings were frightening.
- 1 in 6 women believed spray tans protect them from the sun
- 1 in 20 women believed only fair skinned or those with red hair need to worry about using sunscreen
- 1 in 5 women only worried about using sunscreen while on vacation
- 7% never worry about sun damage
- 12% worry more about wrinkles than skin damage
- 6% worry more about avoiding tan lines and sunglass marks
As of 2009, the Great Britain had a population of approximately 62 million people, of which about half are females. 1 in 6 women believe spray tans protect them from the sun; that’s 5,166,667 women!
If the same statistics hold true for the US, a population of 312 million, approximately half of which are women, that’s 26 million women! And those 26 million women are the reason for this article.
